NFL EUROPE - ALLOCATED PLAYERS UPDATE
Week 9 - 6/12/02

Carolina Panthers safety Deke Cooper celebrates helping Rhein to the World Bowl.

THE Rhein Fire became the first team to clinch a berth in World Bowl X - the NFL Europe League's championship game - after defeating the Frankfurt Galaxy 3-0 before a record crowd of 58,572 in Week 9 play this weekend.

The Fire will compete for the title on Saturday, June 22 before the hometown fans in DŸsseldorf, Germany, against either Frankfurt or the Berlin Thunder, who kept their championship hopes alive with a 24-23 win over the Scottish Claymores on Saturday.

The Galaxy earned a spot in the World Bowl by either beating Berlin outright or losing to the Thunder by less than four points. World Bowl IX champion Berlin needs to win by at least four points on Saturday to qualify for a return trip to the title game.

Rhein's win versus Frankfurt in a defensive struggle came before a record crowd of 58,572 at Frankfurt's Waldstadion - the largest ever to witness an NFL Europe League regular-season game.

"The crowd was unbelievable," said Rhein head coach Pete Kuharchek. "It was a great atmosphere and it was super for us to clinch a trip to the World Bowl in this setting."

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Tee Martin passed for 112 yards in the win and kicker Manfred BurgsmŸller connected on a 21-yard field goal midway through the second quarter for the game's only score.

Martin and the Fire were able to prevent the Galaxy from mounting a fourth-quarter scoring threat by keeping possession for 10:17 in the final period. Martin connected with New Orleans wide receiver Onome Ojo on a six-yard pass on fourth-and-four from the Frankfurt 30-yard-line with 3:02 remaining to seal the win.

In Scotland on Sunday, Denver Broncos quarterback Todd Husak led Berlin to a come-from-behind 24-23 win over the Scottish Claymores.

With Berlin trailing 23-10 entering the fourth quarter, Husak guided the club on a pair of touchdown drives, the second capped by a one-yard scoring run by Arizona Cardinals running back Anthony White with 4:31 remaining, giving Berlin a 24-23 advantage.

"This was a tough, hard-fought game," Husak said. "We stayed together as a team and made the plays we needed to. Next week is a big game as well and I think we are all looking forward to it."

Husak completed 17 of 25 attempts for 163 yards and one touchdown on the day. The Broncos' quarterback leads the NFL Europe League with 2,171 yards passing and 13 touchdowns this season.

On Saturday in Amsterdam, a pair of Tennessee Titans led the way for the Admirals in a 45-31 win over the F.C. Barcelona Dragons.

Titans' quarterback Kevin Daft completed 16 of 22 attempts for 204 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in directing the Admirals most potent offensive effort of the season. Titans running back Rafael Cooper rushed for 169 yards and a league record-tying four rushing touchdowns in the win.
